Following on from last month, we are looking at how to use the free listing of your business on Google My Business.

We entered via www.google.co.za and then clicked the "grid" icon near the top right. Clicking "My Business" at top right brought us into Google My Business.

If your window is wide enough (better on a PC!) you will see the menu shown on the right.  If not, you can click the "Main Menu" (three bars) icon shown near top left of the picture alongside, to reveal the menu.

Click on Home, the top item.

Here we will see a variety of useful information about your listing. Ignore Ads for the moment, and look for anything flagged as incomplete. Complete it now.

Online Scams V: Email Viruses & Malware

Just in the last few days, we have received numerous emails with generic Subjects like “Re: Transaction failed to your bank account” (supposedly from Emirates Bank), “Re: Order confirmation ref. no. QP214.R8/PO 18-049 dated 12th march, 2018.” (supposedly from Tasty Treat Food of Girona), “Bevestig asseblief” and the somewhat desperate-sounding “Re: Final Notification ( Read Attachment )”.

Most of these contain PDF or other files, all with the intention that you should click on a web link. Don’t.

In our case, AVG anti-virus blocked the attachments except in the latter case, which had a PDF claiming to be from the ONLINE GERMAN NATIONAL LOTTERY WINNING NOTIFICATION 2018, no doubt a 419 scam as discussed last month.

It is a good idea to have a reputable anti-virus and keep it up to date.  Check the companies and email addresses of senders.  Anything purporting to be about an order or payment, but sent to many recipients, or “undisclosed recipients” is a dead giveaway.

You cannot advertise in this Newsletter.

You can display banner or column adverts, on most of the pages on our site.
Each page has a column of adverts approximately 50 mm wide (200 pixels) down the edge.
It also has banner adverts the width of the main text and a maximum of 20 mm high .
You can include text and small pictures in both kinds of adverts.

What's The Cost?

The rates per advert (on one page) for one year are:

·    Banner adverts (except top banner): R500 + VAT each on any web page.

·    Top-of-page banner (only one on each page!) costs double.

·    Column: A square advert costs the same as a banner.  Taller or shorter adverts are priced proportionately.

You may advertise on any pages, at our discretion, on a first-paid, first-served basis.  You might prefer to advertise on your own centre's page, or even on pages of other centres where there are competing shops and you do not have a "smalls" listing.
