Doing Business in Sandton, January 2019

Welcome to the Megaplex Business Booster Newsletter as advertised in our longstanding Newsletter: "Shopping in Sandton".  This short monthly newsletter will give you quick tips that can make your business more profitable, safer and --possibly-- more fun!

On-Line Business Tip: Google Hacks 1 - Negative Keywords:

Google is the world's most popular search engine. So it helps to know a bit more than the average about using it.

It is easy to go to and type in words to search for. But sometimes, we want to exclude some terms.

Say, for example, that we want to find someone who will do upholstery. Or we want to see who is competing with our upholstery business.

If we search for the words upholstery Sandton, we also get many upholstery cleaners. We do not want them. The trick, then, is to use a word that we want to exclude, preceded by a minus, thus: upholstery Sandton -clean. This will exclude pages containing the word "clean" (and "cleaning", and "cleaners").

Online Scams VI: New "Pending Email Closure" Scam

We recently received an email, allegedly from " Support" [actually], that reads as follows:

This is obviously a scam, for many reasons:

  1. We've never heard of fassatech·com.  Our email service provider is local, with a address.
  2. We never received a "First Notice of Pending email closure".
  3. The date is in US format.  What's the first of the 28th month?
  4. "It's" (in "it's allocated email storage limit") should be "its".  Bad English is typical of scams.
  5. Hovering over the REQUEST NOW hyperlink reveals a link to hairdelightllc·com -- who are they?
  6. In any case, no reputable email service provider will threaten to summarily delete one's emails.

However, parts of this are well done and could fool the unwary.  Clicking on the REQUEST NOW hyperlink brings up a greyed-out version of the Megaplex home page, with a login screen in the foreground:

Note that they have even used our favicon (the little Megaplex logo at top left)!

Typing any password at all (no spaces) causes the login box to disappear, and puts one on a page mail·megaplex·co·za, which is an exact clone of our home page.

That's not how we access our email.  Perhaps it could fool someone in another organisation.

You cannot advertise in this Newsletter.

However, you can advertise in Megaplex's other Newsletter: “Shopping in Sandton”.  It goes out early in each month to shops, businesses, and individuals mostly in Sandton and Bryanston, an area with many of the highest disposable incomes in Africa.   The Newsletter has run continuously since November 2009.  Circulation is around 6000.

You can have a column advert or a banner if space is available.  The column adverts are about 50 mm wide (200 pixels) stacked down the left-hand edge.  Horizontal banners in between sections are a maximum of 20 mm high and grow or shrink to suit the width of the main text.  You can include text and small pictures in both kinds of adverts.

What's The Cost?

Banners cost just R250 + VAT per issue (minimum 2), with discounts for more paid up front (10% off for 4, 20% off for 6, 33.3% off for a year).
For Column adverts, a square (200 x 200 pixels) costs the same as a banner. Higher or shorter ones are priced proportionately, thus one twice as high costs double.
There is an additional cost for the top of column, and top banner (only one of each, and none are available at present).

To get started, click here, fill in and send the resulting email.
