Doing Business in Sandton, February 2019

Welcome to the Megaplex Business Booster Newsletter as advertised in our longstanding Newsletter: "Shopping in Sandton".  This short monthly newsletter will give you quick tips that can make your business more profitable, safer and --possibly-- more fun!

On-Line Business Tip: Google Hacks 2 - Specific Keywords:

Google is the world's most popular search engine. So it helps to know a bit more than the average about using it.

It is easy to go to and type in words to search for. Google will then search for pages where all those words occur. Sometimes that is not good enough; instead we want to search for a specific phrase, or make sure that specific words occur on the page.

Say, for example, that we want to find a program to produce soil profiles and borehole logs (like dotPLOT, for example).  You could ask Google to search for soil profile borehole log (without quotes): That will produce about 787 000 results.  However if you search for "soil profile" "borehole log" (with quotes), it finds only about 7 450 more specific results (including dotPLOT).  Using quotes makes your search more specific.

Online Scams VII: The 'Nigerian' Purchase Scam

You receive an email from someone wanting to buy something from you or your website. He wants to pay by cheque and (usually) wants you to ship the products to his address in Lagos, Nigeria.

The variants on this scam often involve:

  • A payment via cheque is made, but (some time later) is returned by the bank on which it's drawn because it was forged. The scammer counts on your willingness to ship the product after your bank has (provisionally) cleared the cheque, and before the cheque has cleared its way through the whole international banking system.
  • An "accidental" overpayment by the buyer, who asks you to deposit the cheque and then refund the amount of the "overpayment" when you ship the goods. You're out both the cost of the goods, and whatever "overpayment" you refund, when you find that the original cheque is rubber.

You cannot advertise in this Newsletter.

However, you can advertise on

You can display banner or column adverts, on most of the pages on our site.
Each page has a column of adverts approximately 50 mm wide (200 pixels) down the edge.
It also has banner adverts the width of the main text and a maximum of 20 mm high .
You can include text and small pictures in both kinds of adverts.

What's The Cost?

The rates per advert (on one page) for one year are:

·    Banner adverts (except top banner): R500 + VAT each on any web page.

·    Top-of-page banner (only one on each page!) costs double.

·    Column: A square advert costs the same as a banner.  Taller or shorter adverts are priced proportionately.

You may advertise on any pages, at our discretion, on a first-paid, first-served basis.  You might prefer to advertise on your own centre's page, or even on pages of other centres where there are competing shops and you do not have a "smalls" listing.
