Welcome, Chilli Lane, to the Megaplex site!We have for a while been threatening to include Sunninghill in our overview of shops in north-eastern Sandton, and have now taken the plunge by adding Chilli Lane to our site. Others will follow. Chilli Lane is the newest and largest of the shopping centres in Sunninghill, on the new extension of Rivonia Road. As with many successful centres, it is built in a curve, focusing on (and giving an unrivalled view of) the open-air car park, while ignoring the Sandspruit and park behind the centre. In Chilli Lane you will find branches of many of your favourite restaurants –Nando's, Debonairs, Global Wrapps, Steers, Primi Piatti– and a few that are rare or unique to the centre: Ocean Basket, Doppio Zero, Jacky's Kitchen and Curry Delhi (nice pun!). There's a DIY Depot (previously Jack's Paint), which seems to be replacing Mica Hardware as the local hardware shop. There's a Blockbusters Video for DVD rental, a small bookshop (remember "books", those rectangular things with "pages"?), and Just Ginns, a cute little shop with a wide range of things: flowers, gifts, collectables, recipes, cakes and cookies. Interesting, and unusual, is Troi Sport: They are triathlon and multisport Specialists, selling triathlon clothes, running shoes & gear, bikes, nutrition, swimming gear, cycling gear, wetsuits, bike accessories, sport sunglasses, heart rate monitors. They also do triathlon coaching, travel and event management. Further reflecting the sport and fitness theme, Optimum Nutrition, supplying sport nutrition and gym nutrition. products, and a Virgin Active gym. For when things don't work out, there's a physiotherapist's. For when they do, there's a Photographic shop (Foto First) and framing (Frame Mart).
Hiding the Blacks:Shopping for a black sweater, I couldn't find anything suitable. A helpful saleswoman offered to check the store catalogue. After flipping through the pages, she looked up in consternation. "Alice," she called to her co-worker, "what are we calling black this year?" New, Movers and Shakers Back to top
Restaurant Review (****) by Judith Back to topThe Ocean Basket, Chilli Lane Shopping Centre, off Rivonia Road, SunninghillOh Sunday nostalgia with live music from a musician into sixties and seventies songs! This made for a relaxing lunch in a centre that bubbles with life and kids charging around the place. Service is great and attentive, with perfect timing to ask how your meal is - not when you have your mouth full but when you are pausing between munches! Indulged in a fish and calamari combo, which had succulent fish and slightly overdone calamari. The chips were a disaster but was too busy listening to the music to complain. Chardonnay by the glass is excellent. Would recommend that they don't put so much salt in their sauces - perhaps liaise with Fourways and Pietermaritzburg on this matter? Overall, a wonderfully relaxing chill out Sunday lunch - will go again. Contact Details for Ocean Basket.

Civic Matters Back to topLast month we said we'd like to lobby SANBS to open a new blood donor clinic serving our area, and asked us to e-mail us your support. Our heartfelt thanks to the three readers who responded, of our 1804 recipients! Sorry, but it seems a majority of Sandtonians do not understand how vital it is to help ensure a viable blood supply for when they have an accident. Morningside Shopping Centre will be hosting the local CANSA (Cancer Association) on Saturday, 5th March and depending on demand, Sunday, 6th March 2011. Get your head shaved or sprayed! Adults donate R50-00 and children under 12 years old donate R25-00. Moe details here. Also on 5-6 March, it's your last chance to register for the Municipal Elections at the polling station of your choice, or to check if you are still registered (ward boundaries have changed). If you are unhappy with the state of our alleged "world-class" city, it's time to work and vote for a party that can change it. Check here to see if you are registered. At the CheckoutThe lady in front of me was complaining about how high the prices are now compared to the prices in the good old days. The checkout clerk acted surprised and told her she didn't look old enough to remember them! |
