Joburg City Open Day this SaturdayOn Saturday 24 November the third City of Joburg "Open Day" will be held at the Sandton Convention Centre from 10:00-15:00. A whole raft of City officials will be there to help you with any issues you have. For those with billing problems, this is your chance to interact with a billing official who could possibly solve your problem there and then. Bring your account number and supporting documents and get it sorted out! Although it is technically for Region E (Sandton, Alexandra, Houghton, etc), anyone from anywhere in the city can go along.
What If...Sandton Convention Centre on the Joburg City Open Day at a quarter to ten, and the queue of disgruntled overcharged Ratepayers stretches all around the foyer. Some have been there since four a.m. and tempers are frayed. A spindly little fellow with a file boldly walks to the head of the queue. There is a brief altercation and he finds himself dumped at the back of the queue. Undeterred, he gets up and heads to the front again. This time the altercation is louder and more protracted, and he finds himself dumped at the back again. Dishevelled and without his glasses, he gets up again and, rather more hesitantly, heads to the front, muttering "I have a good mind not to open the hall for open day..."

Restaurant Review by Judith Back to top* Le Bistro et L'Annexe aux Petit Cochon, Codfather Village of Restaurants, First Avenue RivoniaWhat a disappointment! The smoking section is not closed off from the non-smoking section in violation of SA laws and French courtesy. In a good French restaurant, smoking is NOT allowed as it is understood to spoil the appreciation of the food. We ordered hot chocolate and Tokara Sauvignon Blanche for drinks plus chicken livers as a starter which we share. However, big mistake: I also ordered the Calamari in lemon butter sauce (another starter) as my main course. Net result, both starters arrived together and the latter was sent back. The main Osso Bucco arrived next with the revamped calamari. The Osso Bucco was mediocre and the calamari was incredibly salty. The latter was sent back and a new one produced, eventually. This did not meet any standard. If you are a smoker, this is for you. If you want good food, avoid this venue. Contact Details for Le Bistro at Petit Cochon.

Dangerous FoodJulius decided look for some relief from his legal woes, so he went to a seafood disco. Unfortunately he pulled a mussel. Public Interest: Nail Fungus Back to topA lady wrote to this newsletter: "I was a regular client of a certain nail salon until August this year but due to negligence on their part, my nails became infected with a nail fungus. When I approached them to ask that they pay for my treatment which is an oral prescription which has to be taken for the next 6 months, they refused to take responsibility. I have emailed the owner several times but she just ignores me. I've supported them and spent lots of money at their salon over time and the treatment I'm now receiving is shocking. I consulted a doctor who confirmed it was onychomycosis, an infectious nail fungus. I would like to warn other women who regularly have their nails done. It's a horrible thing to contract a fungus and I'm now having to pay R12 000 for a course of treatment for 6 months for my daughter and me (she contracted it from me). They are not prepared to cover the costs." We sent this to the salon in question, who phoned us back and and also gave a response in writing, part of which reads "ALL metal tools live in Barbicide solution throughout the day. - Every client is sprayed with Barbicide Hand Sanitizer - All foot files are washed with hot water and antibacterial wash, then sprayed with Barbicide. - All files are sprayed periodically throughout the day with Barbicide spray and brushed down." The customer disputes this, saying "I definitely witnessed people being seated immediately after clients leaving and the same [unsterilized] tools being used on them". The difficulty lies in proving that the infection came from the salon, so all we can do is to issue a general warning: Check that your nail salon is meticulous in disinfecting its instruments, and don't share your nail file! We did Google searches for various keyword combinations around the problem. "Nail fungus complaint" showed up just three complaints this year (all on "Hello Peter"), and no other complaints about this salon.
The Checkout: eTolls Update Back to topThe conclusion of the third and final eToll public information session on eToll tariffs and exemptions, hosted by the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) and Department of Transport (DoT) in Sunninghill on Thursday 15 November, delivered a clear and unambiguous rejection by the public of eTolls, according to OUTA and your correspondent. Nevertheless the government seems intent on forcing it through. Have your say by e-mailing Mr T. H. M. Mphahlele at The Department of Transport: MphahleT@dot.gov.za by 25th November 2012. Alternatively you can phone 012 309 3481 or fax 012 309 3134. OUTA's response is here. |
