And Now for Something Completely Different...

In a recent internet interview with Sam Harris, there is an amazing video of martial arts Master Yanagi Ryuken, an aikido practitioner in Japan, demonstrating his ability to beat opponents without even touching them. The first of two videos shows Yanagi knocking down his students just by making gestures as they attack him for four-and-a-half minutes.  The second video is much shorter.  In it, Yanagi fights a martial artist from a different school, who punches and kicks him to the floor in under a minute.

An extreme example, perhaps, but things that seem to work in the gym or dojo often don't work on the street.

Which brings me to Krav Maga (pronounced Kraav M'gaa).  It is a self-defence system developed in Israel, that focuses on practical techniques drawn from a wide variety of martial arts.  Used by Israeli Defence Forces and various law enforcement and military organizations worldwide, Krav Maga is known for its focus on real-world situations and efficient counter-attacks.  Derived from street-fighting skills, it includes fitness, unarmed combat, knife and gun disarms, and grappling techniques.  After a month of training two nights a week at Wendywood Sports Recreation Centre, I may be the fittest I've ever been.  Interested?  Details here.

Restaurant Review by Sharmini Brookes Back to top

**** Fishmongers – Nicolway

Perfectly cooked seafood with great service in pleasant surroundings – a failsafe venue for fish enthusiasts that is definitely upmarket.

In a previous review on queuing for Tasha’s I mentioned the fact that there was no queue at Fishmongers and perhaps implied that they weren’t worth visiting. I take that back. It’s certainly easier to get a table at Fishmongers and that’s why we first ended up there late one evening after seeing a movie but we were pleasantly surprised and I want to sing their praises.

We were warmly welcomed and quickly seated by friendly and efficient staff. The manager made a special point of visiting the all the tables to ensure that all was well.

The house wine –a dry Zevenwacht Sauvignon Blanc– is delicious and inexpensive and that’s saying something for someone who’s used to sampling lots of varieties of Sauvignon Blanc.

There is no better way to start a meal than sharing a platter of crispy deep fried squid heads with a lemon and mayonnaise dip. I followed that with another starter –only because I wasn’t that hungry– of an avocado and seafood salad that was so delicious and refreshing, I re-ordered it the second time I visited. My sister ordered the Pangolin because they had run out of the Hake goujons and loved it. The second time we visited we took a friend along and they had their deep fried Hake goujons with chips which they adored while I re-ordered my seafood and avocado salad as previously mentioned.

I am very happy to recommend this restaurant as a fail-safe venue for seafood lovers. I am pleased to add that the tables are now sought after and it may be wise to book ahead.

Dangerous Food

His friends having deserted him, Julius was dining alone.  Making polite conversation, the waiter, as he set down the entrée, said, "Looks like rain, sir".
Julius sniffed the dish suspiciously.  "Yes", he agreed, "and it doesn't even smell like soup".

Municipal Valuation Roll – Last Week to Object!  Back to top

Calling all property owners in Johannesburg! You have until 15:00 on 3 May 2013 to check your new valuation and object if you feel the value is incorrect.  If you miss the deadline then you will be stuck with that value on your rates bill for the next 4 years!

There are two ways to inspect the Valuation Roll:
(a) Visit a customer care centre.  Our nearest are Sandton Library, Nelson Mandela Square (off West St), Sandton; and Randburg Civic Centre, Bram Fischer & Jan Smuts Aves, Randburg.  These places are where you have to physically hand in your objection.
(b) Access it via the Internet at http://coj.evaluations.co.za and follow instructions. You will be asked for your erf/stand # and suburb, or street address. You can print out the objection form right away. Fill it in, attach supporting documents, and hand it in at the customer care centre.

If you are unsure what your fair value should be, your friendly local real estate agent will do you a valuation free of charge.  Bryan Marks of Jawitz (082 777 0866, bryanm@jawitz.co.za) and Beverley Kroll of RJD Realty (011 884 0060, 082 372 1721, bev@rjdrealty.co.za) were kind enough to give us valuations, and said we can tell you.
