Scam Alert! We received this email from a business acquaintance this month:
Subject:
Good Morning We replied: Dear XXX And got this response: How
are you ? hope all is well with you sorry to bother you I'm actually in need of
a loan, i have decided to request this from you. its just a token and i intend
to refund back by next week. please are you able to loan me this funds. Interesting... It turns out that R8000 is "needed for some outstanding payments" and is wanted that same day. We phoned the contact, and he knew exactly what it was about. His iPad had been stolen and the thief was spamming his address book, seeing whom he could scam. We spun him along and got an FNB account number to pay the money into and a cell phone number for the proof of payment, then gave them to the FNB Fraud Line (087 575 9444, risk.online@fnb.co.za). We await feedback on how the scammer gained access to what was apparently a longstanding trustworthy account. Moral: Pasop! Criminals are clever, but they have not yet discovered the Shift key or correct punctuation (some haven't, anyway).

Restaurant Reviews by Judith Back to top**** Ocean Basket, Morning View Centre, South Road, MorningsideThis branch only opened at the beginning of the year and is very family orientated, with ample entertainment for youngsters in the form of play gyms and other equipment. It has a good sized deck nearby this play area and a wonderful corridor for riding toy motor bikes up and down! The staff and manager are very friendly. The interior area is bright and welcoming. This was just my second dinner out after starting the Banting lifestyle in January, so it was a good test for learning how I can adapt normal restaurant offerings to this. Still not drinking wine, I ordered sparkling water with ice and lemon and my partner opted for Appletiser. My drink choice is a real treat and change from just large amounts of cold water! We will probably have to look for a Soda Stream again (assuming they still exist). For food, my partner ordered the Ocean Basket Fish and Chips (OB on the menu) and I opted for the Grilled Calamari Salad. Predictably the chips had to be returned for crisping. Not so predictably, the salad also had to be returned as it arrived pre-dressed. Once the food was rectified, the OB fish and chips proved to be their usual reliable selves. The Calamari Salad came with olive oil on the side, which was virgin cold pressed and wonderful. The calamari were great. We finished our meal with a Kataifi and a filter coffee - both extremely good! The service was good and we would definitely go again. Funny Language, English...What are unshelled clams? To "shell" a clam means to take it out of its shell, so "unshelled" clams must be clams in the shell, contrary to appearances!

Green Tip Back to topEach year thousands of birds, mammals and reptiles living in gardens or suburbs become orphaned, sick or suffer injuries. Most veterinarians do not have facilities to cater for wildlife, leaving would-be rescuers unable to determine what to do with them. FreeMe has filled this gap. The public can now bring wildlife to them for specialised treatment, care and rehabilitation until they can be released. Looking for a cause to support or to participate in? Tips for a Safer Holiday Season Back to topAlexander Forbes Insurance has issued a reminder to holiday makers not to let their guard down over the upcoming long weekends. As schools close for the holidays, many people will lock up their houses and head for holiday destinations. Here are three forms of insurance that you need to have before going on vacation: Motor vehicle, personal accident and personal property cover. Personal Accident cover –the cheapest form of disability cover because it is limited to accidental injury– can pay benefits for death, permanent or temporary disablement and medical expenses and does not apply only to road accidents. Travellers driving outside of South African borders should ensure their motor cover includes the territories they will be visiting. Be sure to purchase the compulsory insurance of the country as you enter at the border. Ensure that, if you are in an accident, your insurer will cover the cost of transporting your damaged vehicle back to South Africa. Review your insurance policies to make sure the movable items of personal property that you will be taking with you on holiday are insured for the correct sums. These can include watches, cameras, cell phones and other electronic goods as well as camping or sporting items. Finally, remember to apply all the usual tips on securing your house and goods, such as packing the car away from any prying eyes, asking a neighbour to empty your post box, checking that your alarm is working and unplugging electronic equipment to protect it from power surges. Don’t close your curtains and leave lights on –that is a dead giveaway to would-be thieves that no one is home.
Overheard at the Checkout:"Cindy! You're wearing a hijab! –Have you converted to Islam?" "Salaam, Faizela. Sorry, no, I'm still an atheist. It's just that I discovered your secret." "My 'secret'?" "Yes... When I wear this, I can save a fortune by not getting my hair done!" |
