No Looting in Sandton and
Bryanston
This week has brought widespread criminality, with looting in KwaZulu Natal, and
Gauteng townships.. Even the burning of shopping centres. Why burn a
shopping centre? And then have to travel elsewhere to buy food? It
makes no sense. Bad days for the country, and disastrous for the poor.
Good news, however, for our readers in Sandton and Bryanston: No looting in
our area. Many malls are closing early and have extra security as a
precaution, so check with them if you want to go shopping.
Preferably, don't! Rather stay at home and do not clog the malls. Some
supplies will be disrupted, but nothing major. Panic buying will only make
maters worse. Remember how embarrassed you were about the crate of tinned
baked beans you bought when COVID-19 hit?
Dis-Chem vaccination sites in Midrand, Fourways, Menlyn and Centurion are
operating (Twitter here). Clicks have closed 130 stores in Gauteng, but the ones in our
area are open as usual.
Sandton City is open, but some tenants are not operating. See
twitter updates here.
In a heartening sign, many communities are rallying around to protect their
centres from looting. We hope that people in our area will, too, if it is
needed.

Do You
Use Excel? Making Mistakes is Easy!
Finding errors is hard! But they can
kill your company! In 2012, a London Olympics employee accidentally
typed in “20,000” instead of “10,000". The Olympic Committee
then sold 10,000 tickets for non-existent seats at minor events. They had to upgrade them to major events
—at a loss.

The POPI Act (POPIA) is STILL Your Problem...
The Protection of Personal Information Act. AKA the POPI Act, or POPIA,
officially went
live on 1 July 2021. What happened?
Not much.. The
Information Regulator seems to be out to prove that they are as useless as
most Government Departments and, as of today, their "Registration of Information
Officers Portal" is still unavailable, You can go there and download a fillable
PDF to register as your Information Officer, and email it to them.
Which we did a couple of months ago, and haven't heard from them about our
Information Officer registration. Technically, you have to have a
registered Information Officer before your company can do anything about POPIA
compliance.
This is a typical government Catch-22: Pass an act with massive penalties for non-compliance, and then be so slapgat that people cannot comply.
However...
At some point the Information Regulator will get its act together. Even
though they will have made it impossible, technically speaking, for you to
comply, expect them to demand compliance anyway. Backed of course by huge
penalties.
Make use of the hiatus to get clued up on what POPIA requires, and how you can
get compliant for a fraction of what it would cost a big business.
Here's a free course that tells you what the law says –in plain English.
It's as long as a typical evening seminar, but online:
Free Online POPI Act Training.
Alternatively, or as well, click here for a free one-hour webinar TONIGHT
and NEXT WEDNESDAY that will get you orientated fast.
Funny Language, English...
If "escalate" means to go up, shouldn't the moving
steps coming down be called a "De-Escalator"?
