Food and Fitness News from Grosvenor Crossing

It has been a while since we visited Grosvenor Crossing Centre in Bryanston.  It's on the little triangle where William Nicol Drive, Main Road, and Grosvenor Road cross.  Yes, you do know it: There's a BP garage there.

The former Adega Restaurant has left the franchise and changed its name to Arinto.  Not much else has changed there, which is probably good.

The centre is now fully tenanted, also good.  Seattle Coffee, FishAways, Steers, Debonairs Pizza, and Mochachos Chicken are still there.  The Chinese restaurant and the waffle shop have not survived.

There is now a florist and Balloon Bar.  One mustn't neglect the balloons!  I'm not sure if they are grown locally, though.

It's the first place that I've seen a physical shop for The Courier Guy.

Fitness is still big in the centre, with a new home-gym equipment shop, a workout gym, and "Africa’s Largest Adventure Gear Retailer", the Drifters Adventure Centre.

Food and fitness: You can put on weight at one end of the centre and take it off at the other.

Do You Use Excel?  Making Mistakes is Easy!

Finding errors is hard! But they can kill your company! In 2012, a London Olympics employee accidentally typed in “20,000” instead of “10,000". The Olympic Committee then sold 10,000 tickets for non-existent seats at minor events. They had to upgrade them to major events —at a loss. Get this FREE report on preventing Excel mistakes..

The Restaurant Review Returns! Back to top

Our first review since lockdown.  Let nobody accuse us of being trendsetters.

** Doppio Zero Bryanston, Hobart Grove Centre

Re-visiting an old haunt, now alone.  The tall Mango Iced Tea, made on the premises, was just the thing I needed on a hot day after walking around the extensive centre.  Lovely fresh mint and orange slices.  The latter left my hand sticky as of course I insisted on eating them.

My main course was Mediterranean Hake with a Chunky Avo salad.  At R68 the fish looked like a bargain. But it was cheap because it was a tiny portion, inadequate for someone who missed breakfast.  The salad was produced with great artistry: very pretty, but not filling either. So the main course was a disappointment.  Nobody asked for feedback.

Total price: R170.

A Tale of Two Funeral Policies

When Judith started ailing in 2018, I took out funeral policies with Old Mutual and Stangen, both for R20,000.

Sadly, Judith died on Sunday 10 July this year.

I claimed from both policies.  Stangen was much the better of the two.

The Stangen process was simple: I phoned them on the Monday and they emailed me a claim form.  On Friday evening I emailed them the filled Claim Form, certified ID copies, abridged death certificate, BI-1663 form, and my stamped bank statement.  Stangen paid out R20,000 the next day, a Saturday, mind you. They guarantee payment within 24 hours –even over a weekend, as it turned out.

Old Mutual has a complicated online claim system.  I filled in the lengthy process on the Monday.  They emailed me a password-protected PDF allowing themselves a turnaround time of 10 days.  On Tuesday they SMS'd me, "to proceed with your claim we require a copy of the death Certificate. Should this not be provided within 2 days the claim will be declined."  I received the certificate on Thursday and emailed it to Old Mutual on Friday afternoon, 15 July. On Wednesday, 20 July, R24,074 arrived in my account.

Stangen had charged R180 monthly since inception.  They have now removed Judith from the policy and dropped the premium to R75.

Old Mutual's premium started at R152/month and escalated.  It is now R182.95 from July.  They haven't reduced the premium following the claim.

In summary; Stangen doesn't escalate the policy amount or the premium.  Old Mutual does both.  Stangen had a simple, personal, process.  They paid 17 hours from receiving the paperwork after working hours. Old Mutual had a complicated process and a threatening attitude.  They took 5 days to pay, and allowed themselves ten.

From my experience, I would recommend a Stangen funeral policy over Old Mutual's offering.

Overheard at the Checkout

"I gave blood on Saturday.  The nurse who bled me was named Mercy."
"Was she good?"
"Very gentle, yet professional.  Also quite petite."
"I trust you were grateful for small Mercies."
