A Chance to Shift Your Future

Are you enjoying load shedding? Yes, I know, it reminds you of the joys of camping, but without the mosquitoes.

How about Transnet?  They have allowed much of their track to be stolen or damaged. Now PRASA cannot provide a passenger service between Johannesburg and Cape Town. Maybe it doesn't bother you because you have the money to fly?  Or you enjoy driving 1400 km at the current petrol price?

Then there are the Transnet Ports. They are unable to handle the volume of traffic because of lack of maintenance of their cranes.  Perhaps the price hikes in shops due to the standing time, levies, and trucking instead of rail, don’t concern you.

And crime?  Your private security company can’t protect you all the time.  A Rand Water executive was assassinated yesterday at a public event.

This is what a dysfunctional state looks like.

This is the path to a failed state, the likes of Libya and Sudan.

This is what happens when citizens don’t vote.

Or when they blindly support a party that has failed them.

A change in government is essential. This is why it is vitally important for you to vote in the next election.

You cannot vote if you are not registered.

Check your voter registration at the cost of an SMS.  Send your ID number to 32810.

If you aren’t registered, your last public opportunity to register is this weekend, 3-4 February.

Registration stations will be open in your area from 08:00 to 17:00

For more information, visit the IEC website or call 0800 11 8000.

Or skip the queue at voting stations: check your registration and register online via the DA.

Do You Use Excel?  Making Mistakes is Easy!

Finding errors is hard! But they can kill your company! In 2012, a London Olympics employee accidentally typed in “20,000” instead of “10,000". The Olympic Committee then sold 10,000 tickets for non-existent seats at minor events. They had to upgrade them to major events —at a loss. Get this FREE report on preventing Excel mistakes..

Here is a Simple, Free Tool That Simplifies Everything

Our friend and mentor, Peter Carruthers, writes:

If you're working on a complex project, with lots of moving parts, lots of information, there is a simple, free way to keep track.

The term for this is Mind Mapping. (Putting onto paper what's floating randomly in your head.) It is the way I plan everything, design courses, read text books, and deal with anything difficult.

This saved my bacon when I first began using the technique in 1974 -on paper- to pass Matric after four years of missing classes.

The free tool I used for years is called FreePlane, and it is awfully powerful. Nowadays, there are hundreds of tools. FreePlane is great to start learning, before spending money.

MindMapping for Business & Study

Seven years ago, I created a 20 minute YouTube video on using FreePlane. 47000 people have looked at it, and the comments are awesome.

Click here to view Mindmapping for Business or Study. (The FreePlane engineers thought it worth posting on their website.)

It's amazing how we're expected to LEARN, but nobody teaches us HOW TO LEARN.

If you know anyone starting school, college, or even a new job. please share this email, or point them to it some other way. This is a fast way to keep all the threads together.

This single tool has revolutionised my life since 1974. I hope it does the same for you and yours.

Regards
Peter Carruthers

There is One Day Left to Speak Up About the Controversial BELA Bill

The deadline to give written comments on the Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill is 31 January.  That is tomorrow.

BELA wants to bring about comprehensive changes in education. These proposals include:

  • mandatory attendance for Grade R,
  • changing admission procedures for learners in public schools,
  • regulations for homeschooling and registration of students, and
  • government department heads, not school governing bodies, will control language policies and curricula.

Nolu Maki, DearSA spokesperson, says, “BELA has been the subject of heated debates since it was first tabled last year. The National Assembly approved the highly contentious bill in October after the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education adopted it on 26 September 2023.

“However, the select committee on Education and Technology, Sports, Arts and Culture has reopened the BELA bill, marking a pivotal opportunity for South Africans to voice their concerns and suggestions.”

DearSA urges you to seize this opportunity to shape the future of education in the country.

Thought for the Day:

Yes and no?  Why not hedge your bets?  Go for yes, no, and maybe.
