"Shopping in Sandton" has run continuously every month for over 15 years
since
November 2009 (see back issues here). We
also ran a Business Newsletter, "Doing
Business in Sandton" from January 2017 to October. 2021, suspended
for 11 months during the Covid-19 Lockdown.
We started the Megaplex website back in 2004 to advertise
our rooms to let. We wanted somewhere to put useful information about local
amenities for tenants, and the web site was the obvious place. We put
up a page listing the shops in the local shopping centre: That page rapidly became the most popular one on the site!
Over time, we added pages for other shopping centres...Today we have a
listing for
almost every mall and shopping precinct in Sandton and Bryanston, 57 pages in all.
In setting up the site we have tried to be as helpful as possible, giving a
description and contact details for every shop that will give them to us.
This information is often more detailed than that on a mall's own site –if it
has one at all!
The site still runs largely as a public service: None of the shopping
centres to which we send hundreds of new shoppers every month has been
willing to pay a cent towards the work we do, even as some of them spend
thousands on glitzy websites with moving pictures and maybe –if you are
lucky– the names of the shops and their phone numbers!
Over time we have made a
small income from advertising on the website and in this newsletter,
but it continues to be largely a labour of love towards increasing the
prosperity of our area. However, you can now find most centres
on Google, often with information they have "borrowed" from the Megaplex site.
Irritatingly, Google often gives out our phone number as Centre Management for
the centres we list.
Maintaining a site of 57 shopping centres, numerous restaurant reviews, and
other interesting material comes at a cost. As does preparing and sending
the newsletter: We can't do it free for much longer.

Premier Plumbing Supplies, Woodmead Commercial Park: 8 January 2025
For a change from restaurants, today we compare two plumbing suppliers.
After all, plumbing is essential, restaurants less so, no?
The hinge mechanism that connects the lid and toilet seat to the bowl of one
of our toilets had rusted through. I needed a fix that did not involve
replacing the entire seat, which was still perfectly good.
Our local Mica had nothing off the sort, only whole seats. It was time to look for a more
specialised plumbing shop. I phoned the nearest to me, Plumblink Kramerville,
who said they did not stock such a thing.
I then phoned the huge Plumblink Plus in Woodmead on the other side of the
motorway from Woodmead Retail Park etc. Each time someone picked up the phone it
cut out. So, I went there myself, to discover that they do not stock toilet hinges
either! This is possibly the biggest plumbing shop in Africa, but the
salesperson told me that they don't stock slow moving lines: If anything doesn't
sell within 6 months, they don't stock it. What a wonderful triumph of
commercial penny-pinching over customer-focused service!
When they opened after the Christmas break, I was able to buy a suitable toilet
hinge with no trouble at
Premier Plumbing Supplies, Woodmead Commercial Park. It
cost only R175.20 including VAT. I recommend that you go there for your plumbing
needs and forget Plumblink.
