Nicolway Shopping Centre on then-William Nicol Drive, Bryanston
opened spot-on time as advertised on Thursday 26 April 2012, and for weeks was
almost impossible to get into because of the crowds!
This is a huge centre (over 23 000m² on two shopping levels), in design a much bigger copy of the
successful Morningside Shopping Centre. It has a simple,
straightforward layout none of the "let's get you lost so you buy more" concept of
Sandton City or Benmore Gardens. Parking is on the main road on
three levels. Each of the two levels of shopping has two
entrances one at each end from parking, leading to a straight
passage that runs the length of the centre. The anchor tenants
sit at opposite ends of each passage: Checkers and Dis-Chem on the
"Lower-class' level, and Woolworths and Food Lovers Market on the
"Upper-Class" level.
Anchor tenants include @Home homeware store, Checkers, Dion Wired,
DisChem Pharmacy, Exclusive Books, Food Lovers Market, Incredible
Connection, Nedbank, ABSA, Standard Bank, Tashas Restaurant, and Woolies.
All the restaurants of note are located at the front of the upper level, overlooking the car park so that you
can admire your vehicle. Turn 'n Tender, in a freestanding unit, does have a nice view north towards the Magaliesberg.
Parking is extensive on three levels (the lower two under
cover), but still not enough for the crowds on the first opening
days. Parking is free for one hour only, after which
extortionate rates apply: 2 hours R8, 3 hours R11, 4 hrs R13, 5 hrs
R16, 6 hrs R20, 8 hrs R50, more: R70. Night after 19:00, and
weekends: R10 see picture on left!
A warning: The tiny lifts are totally inadequate for several trolleys, so be sure you park on
the lower level if you plan to shop at Checkers or Dis-Chem, or
the upper level for Woolworths or Food Lovers Market. Park on
the middle level and you are stuck because you'll have to go up or down.
According to their blurb, "The tenant mix comprises one of South
Africa's most compelling food offerings, supported by health care, services and a magnificent
leisure mix of restaurants and coffee shops, all complemented by
niche retailers that will cater for the day-to-day needs of the
community. The 280m frontage on William Nicol will see the centre
becoming iconic, both in visibility and its architectural appeal."
You should be able to keep fit just walking from one end of the
centre to the other.
